Step 4 – Connecting

To connect the wires, take the two black wires and twist the exposed ends together. Cover with a wire nut, making sure it’s firm on the wires. After this, cover the wire nut with electrical tape. Do the same with the wires with white or silver insulation, and then with the ground wire, which is the one with the green insulation or just the bare wire. Always cover the connections with wire nuts and finish with electrical tape.

Push the wires into the electrical junction boxes and then screw covers on the electrical junction boxes. Although this is something most people don’t bother to do it adds an extra layer of safety.

Usually electronically controlled—some models are microprocessor controlled.
Often used for main power distribution in large industrial plant, where the breakers are arranged in draw-out enclosures for ease of maintenance.
Vacuum Circuit Breaker:
With rated current up to 3000 A,
These breakers interrupt the arc in a vacuum bottle.
These can also be applied at up to 35,000 V. Vacuum breakers tend to have longer life expectancies between overhaul than do air circuit breakers.
RCD (Residual Current Device) / RCCB( Residual Current Circuit Breaker) :
Phase (line) and Neutral both wires connected through RCD.
It trips the circuit when there is earth fault current.
The amount of current flows through the phase (line) should return through neutral .
It detects by RCD. any mismatch between two currents flowing through phase and neutral detect by RCD and trip the circuit within 30Miliseconed.
If a house has an earth system connected to an earth rod and not the main incoming cable, then it must have all circuits protected by an RCD (because u mite not be able to get enough fault current to trip a MCB)
The most widely used are 30 mA (milliamp) and 100 mA devices. A current flow of 30 mA (or 0.03 amps) is sufficiently small that it makes it very difficult to receive a dangerous shock. Even 100 mA is a relatively small figure when compared to the current that may flow in an earth fault without such protection (hundred of amps)
A 300/500 mA RCCB may be used where only fire protection is required. eg., on lighting circuits, where the risk of electric shock is small
RCDs are an extremely effective form of shock protection
Limitation of RCCB:
Standard electromechanical RCCBs are designed to operate on normal supply waveforms and cannot be guaranteed to operate where none standard waveforms are generated by loads. The most common is the half wave rectified waveform sometimes called pulsating dc generated by speed control devices, semi conductors, computers and even dimmers.
Specially modified RCCBs are available which will operate on normal ac and pulsating dc.
RCDs don’t offer protection against current overloads: RCDs detect an imbalance in the live and neutral currents. A current overload, however large, cannot be detected. It is a frequent cause of problems with novices to replace an MCB in a fuse box with an RCD. This may be done in an attempt to increase shock protection. If a live-neutral fault occurs (a short circuit, or an overload), the RCD won’t trip, and may be damaged. In practice, the main MCB for the premises will probably trip, or the service fuse, so the situation is unlikely to lead to catastrophe; but it may be inconvenient.
It is now possible to get an MCB and and RCD in a single unit, called an RCBO (see below). Replacing an MCB with an RCBO of the same rating is generally safe.
Nuisance tripping of RCCB: Sudden changes in electrical load can cause a small, brief current flow to earth, especially in old appliances. RCDs are very sensitive and operate very quickly; they may well trip when the motor of an old freezer switches off. Some equipment is notoriously `leaky’, that is, generate a small, constant current flow to earth. Some types of computer equipment, and large television sets, are widely reported to cause problems.
RCD will not protect against a socket outlet being wired with its live and neutral terminals the wrong way round.
RCD will not protect against the overheating that results when conductors are not properly screwed into their terminals.
RCD will not protect against live-neutral shocks, because the current in the live and neutral is balanced. So if you touch live and neutral conductors at the same time (e.g., both terminals of a light fitting), you may still get a nasty shock.
ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker):
Phase (line), Neutral and Earth wire connected through ELCB.
ELCB is working based on Earth leakage current.
Operating Time of ELCB:
The safest limit of Current which Human Body can withstand is 30ma sec.
Suppose Human Body Resistance is 500Ω and Voltage to ground is 230 Volt.
The Body current will be 500/230=460mA.
Hence ELCB must be operated in 30maSec/460mA = 0.65msec
RCBO (Residual Circuit Breaker with OverLoad):
It is possible to get a combined MCB and RCCB in one device (Residual Current Breaker with Overload RCBO), the principals are the same, but more styles of disconnection are fitted into one package
Difference between ELCB and RCCB.
ELCB is the old name and often refers to voltage operated devices that are no longer available and it is advised you replace them if you find one.
RCCB or RCD is the new name that specifies current operated (hence the new name to distinguish from voltage operated).
The new RCCB is best because it will detect any earth fault. The voltage type only detects earth faults that flow back through the main earth wire so this is why they stopped being used.
The easy way to tell an old voltage operated trip is to look for the main earth wire connected through it.
RCCB will only have the line and neutral connections.
ELCB is working based on Earth leakage current. But RCCB is not having sensing or connectivity of Earth, because fundamentally Phase current is equal to the neutral current in single phase. That’s why RCCB can trip when the both currents are deferent and it withstand up to both the currents are same. Both the neutral and phase currents are different that means current is flowing through the Earth.
Finally both are working for same, but the thing is connectivity is difference.
RCD does not necessarily require an earth connection itself (it monitors only the live and neutral).In addition it detects current flows to earth even in equipment without an earth of its own.
This means that an RCD will continue to give shock protection in equipment that has a faulty earth. It is these properties that have made the RCD more popular than its rivals. For example, earth-leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) were widely used about ten years ago. These devices measured the voltage on the earth conductor; if this voltage was not zero this indicated a current leakage to earth. The problem is that ELCBs need a sound earth connection, as does the equipment it protects. As a result, the use of ELCBs is no longer recommended.
MCB Selection:
The first characteristic is the overload which is intended to prevent the accidental overloading of the cable in a no fault situation. The speed of the MCB tripping will vary with the degree of the overload. This is usually achieved by the use of a thermal device in the MCB.
The second characteristic is the magnetic fault protection, which is intended to operate when the fault reaches a predetermined level and to trip the MCB within one tenth of a second. The level of this magnetic trip gives the MCB its type characteristic as follows: – ·

The third characteristic is the short circuit protection, which is intended to protect against heavy faults maybe in thousands of amps caused by short circuit faults.
The capability of the MCB to operate under these conditions gives its short circuit rating in Kilo amps (KA). In general for consumer units a 6KA fault level is adequate whereas for industrial boards 10KA fault capabilities or above may be required.
Fuse and MCB characteristics
Fuses and MCBs are rated in amps. The amp rating given on the fuse or MCB body is the amount of current it will pass continuously. This is normally called the rated current or nominal current.
Many people think that if the current exceeds the nominal current, the device will trip, instantly. So if the rating is 30 amps, a current of 30.00001 amps will trip it, right? This is not true.
The fuse and the MCB, even though their nominal currents are similar, have very different properties.
For example, For 32Amp MCB and 30 Amp Fuse, to be sure of tripping in 0.1 seconds, the MCB requires a current of 128 amps, while the fuse requires 300 amps.
The fuse clearly requires more current to blow it in that time, but notice how much bigger both these currents are than the `30 amps’ marked current rating.
There is a small likelihood that in the course of, say, a month, a 30-amp fuse will trip when carrying 30 amps. If the fuse has had a couple of overloads before (which may not even have been noticed) this is much more likely. This explains why fuses can sometimes `blow’ for no obvious reason
If the fuse is marked `30 amps’, but it will actually stand 40 amps for over an hour, how can we justify calling it a `30 amp’ fuse? The answer is that the overload characteristics of fuses are designed to match the properties of modern cables. For example, a modern PVC-insulated cable will stand a 50% overload for an hour, so it seems reasonable that the fuse should as well.

Home safety tips for the holidays

Take note: Behind the twinkle, sparkle and dazzle of the holidays, safety hazards lurk. Every year, U.S. fire departments respond to about 230 home fires started from Christmas trees, according to a National Fire Protection Association study. And Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day rank as the peak days for kitchen fires.

Lorraine Carli, vice president of outreach and advocacy for the NFPA, said that although Christmas tree fires are not common, they can be deadly. Even hanging decorations can pose a risk that lead to injuries and emergency room visits, she said.

Being aware of common safety measures during this busy and stressful time of year is key, Carli said, whether it’s the simple act of unplugging your tree lights or keeping an eye on your stove while cooking a big meal.

“It’s really, really important just to be vigilant this time of year,” Carli said.

Here are tips from the NFPA and Pepco to make sure you have a safe holiday.

Fires

Cooking is the No. 1 home fire hazard, according to the NFPA, and December is the peak time for candle fires; these often occur in the bedroom, after people fall asleep.

“Fires are a risk in the kitchen year-round, but we’re even more distracted by entertaining guests and family this time of year,” Carli said.

● Stay in the kitchen when cooking and always keep an eye on the stove, oven or grill.

● Keep oven mitts, dish towels and other flammable items away from heating elements and open flames.

● Keep an eye on candles and fireplace fires, and be sure to extinguish them before going to bed or leaving the house.

●Have your chimney cleaned annually. After a fire, dispose of ashes in a metal container, away from flammable material.

●Keep children at least three feet away from fireplaces.

● Check your smoke detectors. “This is a given,” Carli said. “They should be checked once a month.”

Lighting

Holiday lighting poses the risk of overdrawing power and creating a fire hazard, Pepco’s Sean Kelly said. This is especially true of older lights.

“Stringing more than three strands of Christmas lights together, especially older ones, and connecting them to a single electric outlet can cause overheating,” Kelly said. “The circuit breaker trips in order to protect the circuit from overheating and causing damage or an electrical fire.”

Older strands are more likely to overheat regardless, Kelly said, because they require more electricity. Another hazard? Some types of older bulbs can crack but stay lighted, exposing the heated wire, Kelly said.

● Inspect your lights before hanging them. If they look worn (frayed wires, loose or cracked bulbs), don’t hesitate to replace them. Switch to LEDs, which are more energy-efficient and burn cooler than conventional incandescents.

● If you’re stringing lights outside, make sure they are for outdoor use.

● Do not attach more than three strings of lights together.

● Always unplug your lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving the house.

Christmas trees

● Water your tree daily; dried-out trees are a greater fire hazard than trees that are properly watered.

● Keep trees at least three feet away from fireplaces, candles, heating vents or lights.

● Don’t use candles to decorate your tree.

Mexico and microwave electronic products must comply with energy efficiency standards:

1)  for electronic products and microwave newly released NOM-032-ENER-2013 energy efficiency standards, starting from September 20, 2014 to enforce.
The Mexican standard applies to the following electrical and electronic equipment:
Digital TV adapter, received via cable television signal decoder, satellite images, and Internet Protocol (IP), such as printers, scanners copying equipment, copiers and multifunction, microwave, separate or not separate standalone devices, audio sound capabilities, video player or DVD home theater or disco digital high definition (Blu-ray), a TV with a light-emitting diode (LED), liquid crystal display (LCD), plasma display screen (PDP) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED), 100 volt single-phase power supply voltage to 277 volts AC, 50 Hz or 60 Hz, manufacture or import of these products require labeling.
2)  Power Tools Standard NMX-J-524/1-ANCE will be revised, the new standards will take effect November 16, 2014 was enforced.

China Trade Surplus Widens 46.5%

Shipments to the European Union slowed (4.1 percent from 14.9 percent in September) and those to Japan shrank at a faster 8.1 percent (-5.3 percent in the previous month).
Imports advanced 4.6 percent year-on-year to USD 161.5 percent in October, slowing from a 7 percent increase in September. Imports from South Korea (12.6 percent in October from 27.8 percent in September) and the United States (2.2 percent versus 12.6 percent) eased the most. In contrast, purchases from the European Union surged 10.4 percent (9.1 percent inthe previous month).

Can You Be Friends With Your Boss?

A few years ago, I found myself uncomfortably witnessing a painful breakup. But it wasn’t a couple struggling through a divorce; it was the unraveling of a friendship, complicated by the fact that the two people in question were also a boss and his subordinate. They were once so close that the boss, Jason (not his real name), and Martin (also not his real name), took family vacations together. Because they also frequently commuted to and from work together, the rest of us came to understand that Martin had unique access to our boss and that he was in a position of power because of it.

Now Martin was reduced to hovering in the office hallways hoping that he’d “casually” bump into Jason on his way home and that Jason would offer him a ride. We never really knew what led to the splintering of the relationship, but it was clearly not a good thing — for either person, or for the company. They soldiered on in a kind of forced formality — reporting lines were rejiggered under the guise of a larger restructuring — but eventually Martin left the company and it seemed that Jason was relieved.

When I think back to this situation, it’s clear how complicated a boss-employee friendship can be. I’ve been fortunate to have had great relationships with all my bosses — though they never fully crossed into the friendship category. Can it ever be wise to befriend a boss when that person has the power to fire you, refuse you a raise, or generally make your work life miserable?

Of course, there are perks to being friends with your boss. Though we’d like to think we work in a truly egalitarian system, if your boss considers you a pal, she’s more likely to trust you with information, say yes to your vacation requests or a flexible work schedule, and perhaps most importantly, pick you for high priority projects and assignments. After all, it’s human nature to treat people you like better than those you don’t. “If you are closely connected to someone at a higher level in the organization, they may be able to promote you, spread your reputation, [or] provide you with access to information that is useful to use,” says Monique Valcour, a professor of management at EDHEC Business School in France.

So how do you know when it’s a good idea to be friends with your boss — and when it’s just too risky? The answer, experts say, depends on a number of factors.

1. Were you friends before you became the subordinate? “It’s easier to have your boss turn into your friend than to have a friend turn into your boss,” says Ben Dattner, an organizational psychologist and author of The Blame Game: How the Hidden Rules of Credit and Blame Determine our Success or Failure. If a friendship predates a new reporting relationship, you have to make a concerted effort to maintain some degree of role clarity. Self-awareness – on both sides — will be key. Ask yourself, “What is my relationship to this person now? How should we be relating to one another?’” suggests Valcour. “Follow your sense of what’s comfortable and what’s not.”

2. Are you friends because you genuinely get along or did you try to develop a friendship because it might serve you? “If you have a natural affinity, genuinely like each other, and want to have a social bond, I think that’s worth cultivating, as it would be with other coworkers,’’ suggests Dattner. ‘’But I wouldn’t make a special effort beyond what you’d do with any other coworker. That would take on a Machiavellian tinge, which I think you don’t want.’’ A relationship that’s based on you making a power play isn’t likely to be a strong one, and you run a higher risk of it ending in disaster, especially if your boss senses that you’re getting close to her to advance your own career.

3. Are you willing to talk with your boss about boundaries so that the friendship/boss line doesn’t get blurred? If the relationship has shifted from being friends-colleagues to being boss-subordinate, have a direct conversation about how to make sure the lines don’t get blurred. You can even articulate the lines you’re drawing in the moment: “I’m speaking as your friend here…” or “As your employee, I’m telling you…” It may seem artificial to do that, but it helps. There’s no escaping, however, the fact that a superior-subordinate relationship comes with complications that you might not face in other friendships. You might tell your buddy about the highs and lows of your personal life or whine about a colleague who is getting on your nerves. But should you feel just as free to vent to your boss? “Anytime you provide your boss with a piece of information, think about the fact that you’re both friends and he’s your supervisor. Keep it as uncomplicated as possible.”

4. Will you face backlash from your peers if you’re perceived as being the boss’s favorite? It’s possible that your colleagues will be wary of you getting special treatment so you have to make sure that your peers don’t end up resenting you. “Monitor the decisions the boss is making to make sure you’re not given all the plum assignments, all the easy trips,” says Dattner. “Get feedback from other people in the workplace on whether your relationship is a problem for others.” If it does seem to be causing resentment, discuss this with your boss. You might say, “I really appreciate you’ve given me some of the softball assignments, but I’m concerned my colleagues might perceive this as favoritism.” Work hard to be a good team member, independent of your relationship with your boss. One person I spoke with recalls that working for a friend actually made him up his game. “We both had to go to great lengths to make sure things appeared to be on the up and up,’’ he recalls. “My performance had to be exemplary so it didn’t look like she’d just hired her friend.”

It’s possible your boss will go to the opposite extreme, too. He might end up giving you the short straw so as to not be accused of favoritism. Monitor the decisions from that perspective, as well, Dattner says, and don’t be afraid to confront your boss if that’s the case. “You might want to say to your boss, ‘I understand you’re not trying to give the appearance of favoritism, but this is out of whack.’”

So where should the lines be drawn — if at all? At the end of the day, having a positive, constructive, and trusting relationship with your boss is always a good thing, says Erickson, and everyone should work toward that. But whether it should cross the line to genuine friendship is less clear. As Erickson says: At the end of the day, it’s a personal preference.


Business Lessons from Chess Not To Be Missed

Chess teaches so many things about life. It is really a way of life if you learn from it. As there are millions of possible chess moves in a game there are also countless lessons from chess—both personal and for business. I play chess on a regular basis to keep my mind sharp and to keep being reminded of the many lessons I have learned from it. Just when I need the lesson it reveals itself in a game I am playing. Tempo has been my latest lesson. I also subscribe to Pete Tamburro’s excellent chess column for the same reason and I recommend it to you too. Chess makes my mind fly with possibilities and helps me with my critical thinking and it can help you as well!

Here are just three of the many business lessons I have gained from:

Situations in Life can be Deceptive even if you are Top

1) You are always one move in life from a surprised checkmate even if you are super rich and super powerful. In chess it has happened to people with 3 queens on the board and being huge amount of materials ahead, no matter how powerless your opponent appears, it is their position that matters and they can take you out. Examples of these colossal falls abound in business. One that comes to mind is Friendster, it was the first social network rage, it got taken over by MySpace who looked so powerful no one could imagine that anyone could topple it, then came Facebook, and like its two predecessor someone will come along and top it as well.

Never stop innovating, gauging your competitors, and storing enough reserve for any hard times ahead. If you lose your way fight hard to strengthen your position and as soon as you can find your way to a win take it—Apple and many comeback businesses have learned this well, but it was because they were good strategist and did not panic when the shadow of the wrecking ball loomed over them. This lesson is especially useful for startups who are on the rise, remember others are working to disrupt your disruption and you cannot be complacent. Even giants like Facebook and Twitter can be toppled easily by the right invention or innovation. My own innovation can cripple Twitter itself and later innovations can affect Facebook greatly. A small shift is all that is needed to topple a business these days!

Timing is Everything

2) You can be one move away from mating your opponent and never get there because he gets you first. Being almost there has caused businesses billions when someone gets there first. But being first does not guarantee you success either; it is the timing or tempo of what you offer that matters. Facebook had timing that there was a backlash against MySpace with its spammy pages and they gave a clean and easy to use interface which came at the time when people were looking for simpler alternatives. MySpace took it away from Friendster because it too was easier to use and much flashier and open. The timing each of these companies had made them rise to the top and lack of staying with the times made them lose in the end. AOL had bad timing when it kept wasting money sending out CDs that never got used because people wanted open internet access and not a closed system like theirs. Time ran out for them after they spent all of their money trying to force people into a system that no longer worked.

Takeaway

Read your business landscape well and plan a route that gets you where you are going the most efficient way and lookout for landmines that others may have set in your way. If you have to wait for something wait, if you have to speed something up do your best to do so, but arrive not too early and not too late so you can have the “just right soup” that Goldilocks had! Tempo is your best friend or your worst enemy! A great lesson for startup that wait too long to launch because they are afraid of many things or the product is not perfect. I have personally experienced this problem with my last startup. Find the right time and launch as soon as it is feasible.

When in Trouble Complicate and Cloud the Issue

Not sure if Pete and many Chess Grandmasters would agree with me but it is something that certainly has helped me win many a game. When you have nothing to lose complicate, misdirect, bluff, cloud the issues, do anything you can to buy you time to regroup. This works especially well when your opponent is not strong or well organized. If you get them out of their comfort zone and you are good in the wild lands of innovations you have a chance and you have evened the playing field even if you lose a great deal on the way. In all the commotions find a way to strengthen your position to give you enough power for a final push that lets you win. Politicians are Masters at this. Get in trouble create trouble somewhere else to hide the original trouble (like in the movie Wag the Dog). Newt Gingrich was a Master at this getting the heat off his back while trying to impeach the president for the same offense he himself had committed—by the time he finished the thing most people remembered was the impeachment.

If you are in trouble and stand to lose, innovate, kick, scratch, do whatever legal means are available to you to allow you to survive and regroup and strengthen your forces. When Apple was moribund it innovated and went into a different direction and created a new category of products and by doing so strengthened its appeal in the computer space and saved itself in that space as well. Now it is the largest company in history and may soon be the first to reach a valuation of a trillion dollars!

Why Circuit Breakers Trip?

An overloaded circuit is the primary reason for a breaker tripping and occurs when a circuit is has more connected electrical load than it is supposed to have. When more current runs through the circuit than the circuit was intended to take, the circuit breaker is designed to, well, “break the circuit.”

Circuit breakers come in different ratings that determine how much current they will allow to flow through the circuit. If a 15 Amp circuit breaker is protecting a 15Amp circuit, and 20 Amps of current start to flow through it because a hair dryer, TV and small personal heater were all connected to the same circuit and were on at the same time (even if on different outlets) then the circuit breaker trips to prevent overheating of the circuit.

 

How to Fix Circuit Breaker Tripped?

After analyzing two types of circuit breaker tripped reason, first problem is judge whether is the line or a circuit breaker problem.

General process:

■The most probable reason the breaker tripped is that you simply have too much plugged into one outlet or multiple outlets connected to one circuit.
■Move lamps, heaters, irons, hair dryers and other heavy power consuming devices to a different circuit not being heavily used;
■Turn off some of the devices on the circuit to reduce the load.
■Loose connections are another possible but less common cause. With power off, check outlets for a loose wire and the electrical service panel hot wire connected to the circuit breaker to see if it has become loose. Retighten the connections if necessary.

With constant connectedness and infinite information, consumers have never been so fickle about their choices.

According to the American Marketing Association, a brand is the “name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller’s product distinct from those of other sellers.” That sounds like something from orientation day at Sterling Cooper Draper Price. What does the term “brand” actually mean in practice?

A brand is essentially the one sentence people say about you behind your back. This practical “street” definition based on actual human interaction applies equally well to people, products, and companies. For example, someone might describe Lululemon to their friend as “absolutely the best place to buy yoga gear, ever” or they might say “people say Lululemon great, but I’ve bought a few things and they fall apart, totally overrated.” Someone might describe you to their professional acquaintance as “the smartest person in New York on things related to creativity in advertising, you must talk to them” or “too cerebral and academic, I’m not sure they’d be the right fit for your advertising company.”

That one sentence means a lot. How to specify transformers for the solid-state stabilizer?

Example A:

Wanted is an input swing of +- 42V, Output 240V.  Throughput 15kVA single phase (or 415V 45kVA three-phase).

Make four small transformers:

1.  Primary voltages are all 240V.

2.  Secondary currents are all = 15000VA / 240V = 62.5A
